Navy safeguards economy interest of nation – Sanwo-Olu, Matawalle 

The Lagos state governor, Mr. Bajide Sanwo-Olu and Honorable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, Thursday  said since the establishment of the Nigerian Navy 68 years ago, it  has been a symbol of pride to the nation, carrying out its duties of safeguarding the economic interests of the nation with diligence and unparalleled professionalism.

They made this remarks during the opening ceremony of International Maritime Conference marking the 2024 Navy week celebration at the Conference Hall, Naval dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu in his address said the occasion marks not only a celebration of the achievements and contributions of the Nigerian Navy but also a testament to collective commitment to maritime security, cooperation, and development.

“Today, we reflect on the significant strides the Nigerian Navy has made in safeguarding our nation’s waters, protecting our maritime resources, and ensuring the safety and security of maritime activities. The Nigerian Navy’s dedication and bravery have been pivotal in combating piracy, smuggling, and other maritime threats, contributing to the peace and stability of our region.

“This event also commemorates our rich maritime heritage, and highlights the crucial role that the maritime industry plays in our nation’s development and our state’s strategic significance in the maritime industry, both locally and internationally.

“As we gather here to celebrate our maritime heritage and commemorate the Nigeria Navy week, it is essential for us to acknowledge the professionalism, dedication, courage and sacrifice of our naval officers. Your service is the bedrock of our maritime security and a source of national pride.”

 “As a government, we will continue to acknowledge and show appreciation to all our military officers both serving and retired so that their efforts and sacrifices will not be forgotten,” he said.

Also in his good will message, the hourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawale, said since the establishment of the Nigerian Navy 68 years ago, the Navy has been a symbol of pride to the nation carrying out its duties of safeguarding its economic interests with diligence and unparalleled professionalism.
