A Quiet Place: Day One has been thriving at the box office, but audiences are not especially excited about the latest movie in the franchise. Led by Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn, Day One is a prequel to the original two movies. It has a fairly high budget at $67 million, but it managed to take second place at the opening weekend box office and looks to be on the way to profitability. Day One‘s shocking ending has been the subject of immense praise by some critics, though audiences appear to disagree with those critics.

With a 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, Day One currently has the worst audience score in franchise history. A 73% is still a positive score, but it is a staggering 19% fall from the last Quiet Place movie. The Tomatometer score is also disappointing, given that it has an 84% score. That is good enough for a Certified Fresh designation, but it is still the lowest score in franchise history.

Critics And Audiences Agree About A Quiet Place’s Decline

Day One‘s reviews mark a serious drop in reported quality for the Quiet Place franchise. Previous movies never dipped below an 83% audience score and a 91% Tomatometer score. Day One, however, saw a 73% audience score and a 84% Tomatometer score. That marks a 19% drop for audiences from A Quiet Place II and a 7% drop among critics. While many massive drops can be attributed to review-bombing, the Tomatometer decline indicates that Day One‘s disappointing reviews could be a genuine indicator of quality. Many negative reviewers in the audience generally complain about pacing, a lack of action scenes, and an inability to introduce anything new to the Quiet Place universe. Many offer praise for Nyong’o’s portrayal, while still reflecting that there is little offered to enhance the worldbuilding. The average reviewer did have substantial praise for the movie, offering an average score of 3.9 out of 5. Critics offered a lower but relatively similar average rating of 7.10 out of 10.

While the decline is a worrying sign, there is still good reason to be encouraged by Day One‘s results. Even without Quiet Place‘s core cast members, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Day One‘s star-studded cast managed to continue the Certified Fresh trend and the positive audience score trend. There was a worrying decline, but the CinemaScore matched A Quiet Place‘s B+, which indicates that it is not quite as drastic as it seems. A Quiet Place: Day One does have a substantial drop, but there is not yet a reason for panic.
