ABSU Research Team Wins TETFUND Grant For Water Purification Device
A team of researchers from Abia State University (ABSU), led by Professor Victor Nwaugo, Director of Research and Publications, has secured a significant research grant.
Their project was chosen by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s (TETfund) Research for Impact (R41) program, awarding them a $250,000 grant.
According to Prof. Victor, the ABSU team is developing a novel biosensor device for water purification using solar energy.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant. This funding will allow us to develop a vital water purification technology that is both sustainable and affordable.
“Our goal is to make clean water more accessible to communities across Nigeria,” Prof. Nwaugo said.
According to reports gathered by THE WHISTLER, four Nigerian research teams received $250,000 grants each from the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI), to strengthen the Country’s research and innovation ecosystem following the successful implementation of the R41 initiative under the auspices of TETfund, in collaboration with Innov8 Technology Hub as technical partner.
The project will be conducted in collaboration with Innov8 Technology Hub, with research activities split between their Abuja location and ABSU’s campus.
This achievement comes on the heels of another successful ABSU research project in 2024. Professor J.C. Igwe, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, led a team that developed a method for recycling palm fiber waste into textiles and fabrics.
Their prototype machine, R-Fibre 24, is awaiting full sponsorship to bring it to market.
ABSU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu, commended the research teams at a recent Senate meeting.
He highlighted these breakthroughs as contributing factors to ABSU’s ranking as the second-best state university in Nigeria.
“Professor Nwaugo’s achievement is another example of the innovative research happening here at ABSU.
“We are committed to supporting our faculty in their endeavors to develop solutions that address the challenges facing our communities,” the VC said.
Professor Ogbulu urged the researchers to maintain their momentum and expressed appreciation to the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for his continued support.
