ABUJA: FG Issues Fresh Flood Warning To Abaji, Kwali, Other Residents

The National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Center under the Federal Ministry of Environment has warned that Abaji, Kwali and Yangoji in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and their environs may witness heavy rainfall likely to lead to flood from June 26 to June 30, 2024.

This was contained in a statement signed on Thursday by Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs for the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD).

According to the statement, flooding is also anticipated in parts of Kaduna State, specifically Kauru, Jaji, and Kachia.

In neighbouring Nasarawa State, areas like Gidan Dogo, Lafia, and Toto will also likely face heavy rainfall.

Similarly, in Niger State, Magama, Bida, Minna, Wushishi, Katcha and Lapai are also likely to witness heavy rainfall.

Others are Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara States.

In response to the predictions, the Acting Director General of FEMD, Mrs. Florence Dawon Wenegieme, appealed to residents and motorists to exercise caution during this period.

“Residents of the FCT should note that barricades have been placed on vulnerable roads and as you drive kindly look out for flood warning signs,” Wenegieme stated.

She noted that FEMD has put in place mitigation measures to ensure that no life is lost to flooding in the FCT.

She however urged residents to be vigilant and always use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency.
