Chris Pine is curious what playing an older Captain James T. Kirk would be like in Star Trek 4. The long-delayed fourth J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movie is reportedly still in development, with screenwriter Steve Yockey taking his shot at penning a new adventure about the Starship Enterprise. Pine, along with his fellow cast mates like Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Zoe Saldana, have all expressed willingness to reunite for Star Trek 4 if the film actually happens.

PopVerse reports that at ACE Superhero Comic Con 2024, Chris Pine spoke about playing an older Captain Kirk along with his USS Enterprise crew in Star Trek 4. Pine knows little about what shape the next Star Trek movie is in, but he reaffirmed how much he enjoys working with his fellow actors, and Chris wondered what playing Captain Kirk in his 40s would be like. Read Pine’s quote below:

In terms of the next phase of [Star Trek], obviously you’re all fans, so I’m sure you’ve read it… We all like one another a lot. I’m good friends with everybody I’ve worked with. We have a great time doing it. I’m a lot older now, so I would be curious where that next story lands us in terms of what it would be and what we’ve said in the press.

Chris Pine’s Middle-Aged Kirk Would Be Fascinating In Star Trek 4

It would be a fresh new take on Kirk by the actor

Chris Pine portraying Captain James T. Kirk in his 40s would be one of the most fascinating aspects of Star Trek 4. Pine, who was 29 when J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek (2009) was released, earned raves for how his Captain Kirk exuded a youthful bravado while perfectly evoking the Kirk played by William Shatner in Star Trek: The Original Series. By Star Trek Beyond, Pine’s Kirk shed much of his impetuousness and matured into his role as Captain of the Enterprise, even briefly flirting with the idea of becoming Admiral Kirk.

In many ways, William Shatner’s portrayal of the older Admiral Kirk in his Star Trek movies enriched the character with greater depth. Shatner’s older Kirk juggled regret and guilt with his desire to continue saving the galaxy with his Starship Enterprise crew. Nearly a decade removed from Star Trek Beyond, there is a blank canvas for Chris Pine – who is currently 43 – to design his own version of what Captain Kirk nearing 50 years of age would be like. But that’s if Star Trek 4 can finally take flight.
