Early Morning Accident On Lagos Third Mainland Bridge Claims One Life

One person has died after an accident that occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in the early hours of Saturday.

The accident, involving a mini truck and a Toyota Camry car, happened around UNILAG Water Front inward Iyana Oworonsoki.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) are currently on ground managing the situation and controlling traffic.

Efforts are being made to evacuate the vehicles involved in the accident off the road.

“A fatal accident occurred early this morning around 6:30am on the Third Mainland Bridge by Unilag waterfront inward Iyana Oworonsoki with a life lost, It involved a Mini Truck (MUS 489 XS)and a Toyota Camry car (KRD 470 JD).

“Personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on ground managing the situation and controlling traffic under the rain,” LASTMA said on Saturday.

“Other emergency responders at the accident scene include men of Nigerian Police Force, SEHMU personnel and a LASTMA tow truck trying to evacuate both vehicles to enable free flow of traffic on the Bridge.”

LASTMA suggested that the accident occurred as a result of overspeeding, saying “Say no to overspeeding on Third Mainland Bridge”.

After the rehabilitation of the failed portions of the bridge, the Federal Government in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), installed speed limit cameras on the bridge to encourage responsible driving, preserve the bridge and improve safety.

The government set the speed limit at 80km/per hour.

“The speed limit has been designed to be 80km/per hour. So, if you speed past 80km in the next few weeks, your honourable commissioner will have you to contend with,” the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Keisha Olukorede, announced in April.
