I've Been Waiting 5 Years For A Deadpool & Spider-Man Movie, Please Make It Happen Marvel

Summary

  • Deadpool is set to team up with Wolverine in July, but director Shawn Levy would love to see Wade join forces with Spider-Man next (I would love that too).
  • The dynamics between Deadpool and Spider-Man in the comics make them a great pairing for an entertaining on-screen crossover.
  • Despite no official plans, a Spider-Man & Deadpool team-up movie in the MCU could happen post-Multiverse Saga, in a future Spider-Man movie, or within the upcoming Avengers crossovers.

Following Deadpool & Wolverine, I’d really like to see Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson team up with more MCU heroes, particularly Spider-Man. Releasing in July, Deadpool & Wolverine will see Deadpool finally joining forces with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, the first and best Marvel superhero the Merc With the Mouth should team up with. However, Wolverine is by no means the only hero best suited for a Deadpool crossover.

Ever since Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and the X-Men IP back in 2019, I’ve been extremely excited to see how Deadpool will be integrated into the MCU. Now, trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine have teased that Wade and Logan will be interacting with the MCU thanks to Loki’s Time Variance Authority. While the fallout of this imminent multiversal misadventure has yet to be revealed, I’m hoping there’s room for Deadpool to one day join forces with the MCU’s Spider-Man, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy seems to agree, having expressed an interest in seeing the duo together as well.

I Really Want Deadpool and Spider-Man To Team-Up In The MCU

Deadpool Can Team Up With Anybody, So Why Not Peter Parker?

One of the best things about Deadpool is the incredibly unique dynamics Wade Wilson provides to any superhero team-up. His obnoxious personality combined with his meta-awareness and fourth wall breaks ensure his crossovers on the page with any hero are highly entertaining. This was true with Wade Wilson’s on-screen team-up with Cable in Deadpool 2, and the same looks to be true with Deadpool & Wolverine. As such, this is something director Shawn Levy clearly recognizes, as proven by his recent Total Film interview where Levy expressed his interest in a potential Deadpool/Spider-Man crossover:

“The thing about Deadpool is I think he makes everything more interesting because of his audacity. But, boy, I’d sure love to see Deadpool and Spidey. That’s a movie I’d love to make. I feel like Tom Holland would run circles around everyone else.”

The opportunity to one day see Ryan Reynolds and Tom Holland bringing their superheroes together on-screen would be incredibly exciting. Following Wolverine, a Deadpool crossover with Spider-Man is something I’ve been hoping for ever since the news broke that Marvel Studios regained the rights to the X-Men. After all, Deadpool and Spider-Man crossovers in the comics are some of my favorite comics of all time (and are loved by many others).

Why Deadpool And Spider-Man Are Such A Great Marvel Pairing

So Much In Common, And Yet So Different

On the page, Spider-Man and Deadpool share similar personalities and humor, resulting in most heroes finding them both respectively exasperating. Even though Spider-Man is often at a loss as to how to best handle Wade, he’s still one of the few heroes who can actually tolerate his antics. Spider-Man sees Deadpool as a genuine friend (albeit one of his weirder ones). Jokes are often made at each other’s expense, and not just over the similarities in their costumes. At one point, it was proven through magic that Spider-Man is Deadpool’s soul mate (hilariously over his own wife).

That said, Deadpool and Spider-Man have their differences in the comics that are just as entertaining. Naturally, Wade is far more willing to use lethal tactics, while Spider-Man carries a level of heroism and goodness that Deadpool admires and sometimes tries to aspire to. As such, the chance to see even a modicum of their relationship on screen in the MCU would fulfill one of my biggest Marvel movie dreams.

When A Deadpool And Spider-Man Team-Up Movie Could Happen

Probably After The Multiverse Saga

Sam Wilson with other heroes in the MCU's Multiverse Saga

Considering what Marvel Studios has already revealed regarding their schedule leading up to Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars, it seems unlikely that a Spider-Man & Deadpool movie would be happening any time soon. Likewise, Deadpool & Wolverine is set to release in July, while a fourth Spider-Man movie from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios is currently in development. With that in mind, a crossover for Wade and Peter would probably have to wait until after the end of the current Multiverse Saga (I can be patient).

It’s heavily expected that the MCU’s next saga will carry a large focus on the emergence of mutants in the MCU and the dawn of a new version of X-Men. Likewise, it seems highly unlikely that Ryan Reynolds will be retiring from the role of Deadpool anytime soon, nor does it seem like Marvel Studios has a desire to recast the Merc With The Mouth. I could easily imagine at least one or two more Deadpool movies before Reynolds is ready to officially hang up the mask and katanas.

I truly believe it’s possible that a Spider-Man/Deadpool crossover could happen a few years from now. This is especially true if Spider-Man 4 kicks off a second trilogy for Tom Holland’s Webslinger as intended. Deadpool could be the perfect MCU hero to be featured in a fifth or sixth Spider-Man movie, especially with Holland’s Spider-Man having matured and grown up following the events of No Way Home.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 4 is the first sequel to the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland as the titular wall-crawler. After wiping his identity for the public’s memory in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker continues his crime-fighting adventures without the aid of Iron Man technology or the support of his former allies.

How Else Deadpool And Spider-Man Team-Up Can Happen In The MCU

Avengers 5 Or Secret Wars? Other Spider-Men?

Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Deadpool custom new image

In the absence of an official Spider-Man & Deadpool movie in the MCU, I would also settle for some sort of team-up between the two heroes within a larger Avengers crossover. As the Multiverse Saga wraps up, perhaps Deadpool and Spider-Man could be paired up alongside other heroes either in Avengers 5 or in Avengers: Secret Wars which is expected to end the Multiverse Saga in a very dramatic fashion. Keeping the multiverse in mind, I’d also be happy if Deadpool teamed up with other live-action Spider-Men such as Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker or Andrew Garfield (I’m not choosy).
