Recent leaked images of David Corenswet as Superman have begun circulating online, but the costume has fans divided. Superman has been adapted many times for both film and television, with various actors taking up the mantle over the years. While each project tends to stick to the classic red and blue costume that the character is best known for, every new iteration of the hero has come with adjustments to the costume, making liberal changes like removing the classic superhero trunks, or adding new features.

However, despite there being a long history of these changes occurring over the years, the latest iteration has got fans locked in heated disputes online. As James Gunn’s DCU prepares to make its debut with Superman in 2025, new images from the set are appearing online, with a clear look at the suit worn by the leading man, David Corenswet. Everything from the symbol on the chest, to the pants he wears have been critiqued, with fans taking firm sides in support of, or against, the suit.

14 Hate: Thoroughly Disappointed

This X user clearly had their hopes set high for the upcoming project. However, as they mention, the first official images of the suit also went down like a lead balloon. Now, with candid shots of the suit in action, @ZWorksFine seems completely shattered as the expectation for something great come crashing down. Despite slight adjustments or improvements to what was seen in the official image, the suit still fails to capture their imagination, and overall leaves a bitter taste in their mouths for the whole project.

13 Love: Super Happy About The Super Suit

Standing squarely on the opposite side of that opinion, this user felt overwhelming joy seeing the suit. As well as pointing out some of the new details, they suggest that the bright and colorful new iteration elicits a positive emotional response. Considering the hero is intended to be a living embodiment of hope, and Gunn set out to bring the character back to those hopeful roots and away from the dark and drab iterations of the recent DCEU, it appears to be a success all round.

12 Hate: Not As Good As The Original

Some users pointed out comparisons between the modern suit worn by Corenswet, and Christopher Reeves’ Superman costume from the 1970s and 1980s. Both feature a much more simplistic design than anything in recent history. However, while the overall colors and design are close to the Reeves version, Corenswet’s modern suit does feature a number of lines embossed across the entire design. For many users online, these lines and panels detract from the simplicity that made the original so iconic.

11 Love: All The Right Stuff… Mostly

In that vein, @adventurecomix points to the paneling on the suit as a negative about the design. However, they also suggest that all the other elements are “perfect.” They highlight the inclusion of some elements that have often been cast aside in recent iterations, particularly the trunks that were a staple of early Superman designs. Despite having a minor gripe, the suit appears to be working in almost every other way to a high standard. This appears to echo an opinion held by many fans and detractors of the suit design.

10 Hate: It Can’t Compare

Living up to their username, @TheAngryBadger3 also compared the suit to earlier versions. However, their take on the design is much less optimistic. They highlight the commonly cited point about how the costume is certain to look different after the filming, editing, and adjustments are made in post-production. They also point to these same arguments in defense of earlier versions of the suit for other actors. However, they go on to say that these suits still looked incredible before, without help, indicating how much of a disappointment Corenswet’s suit appears to be.

But, for @PixelFromTheSky, the suit is the furthest thing from an eyesore. They found themselves so thoroughly in love with the suit that they had apparently been staring at the images all day. While several different images were released, with different angles, and even a look at the Clark Kent alter ego, it’s hard to imagine staring at these images all day. Nevertheless, for some, the suit is proving a remarkable hit that further stokes interest in the project. With so much excitement building ahead of any trailers to showcase the suit, it appears to have a bright future.

Starting with an intense all caps reaction, declaring how the modern CW shows did a better job, before moving on to being in complete denial. Just as strongly as some fans find themselves falling in love with the suit, others are evidently in disbelief and shock.

In response to a witty meme poking fun at the inclusion of underwear on the outside of the Superman suit, @JaketheGodly1 suggests that this modern take on the Man of Tomorrow is exactly what is needed. Superhero movies span a variety of genres, and elicit a range of emotions, but recent takes on Superman have featured a more grimacing, sullen figure for the most part. The images feature a hero smiling in bright colors, and that is resonating for some viewers who felt the change was long overdue.

While they praise Gunn, and reveal their own excitement for the upcoming movie, they point to their disdain for the suit and a hope that the film will flop. While Corenswet’s Superman is clearly intended to inspire hope, perhaps this isn’t the hope that he or director and writer James Gunn were looking for. Either way, they appear to be struggling to know what side of the fence to land on as well.

Once again highlighting the unusual choice of adding potentially unnecessary lines, user @SilvrSez indicates their overall excitement about the suit. Especially highlighting the bright and vibrant colors featured in the outfit, they pushed through their minor critique to ultimately say how much they love the design. It makes perfect sense to have aspects of the design that resonate and others that feel dissonant, especially in a community with so many opinions and fanatic love, but their take appears balanced and leaning in a much more positive light.

Wishing that they could erase the image from their memory permanently, they have presented a blend of cinematic references in the hopes of putting their point across more clearly and emphatically, thus proving their own extreme distaste for the Corenswet Superman suit.
