Tom Hanks' Fifth Movie With Forrest Gump Director Gets Earlier Release Date

Tom Hanks’ new movie Here, a reunion with Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis, gets a release date from TriStar Pictures. Hanks and Zemeckis have worked together a total of four times previously, their crowd-pleasing partnership producing the hit films Cast Away, The Polar Express and Pinocchio, in addition to their 1994 Oscar-winner. The duo’s next movie together, the generation-spanning family drama Here, will feature a de-aged Hanks alongside his Forrest Gump co-star Robin Wright, with a script by Gump writers Eric Roth and Zemeckis.

TriStar Pictures previously slated Hanks’ reunion with his Gump team for a wide roll-out on November 27, 2024, but have now announced that Here will instead come out wide on November 15 (via Deadline).

Here’s New Wide Release Date Pits It Against An A24 Horror Film And Dwayne Johnson

TriStar originally had Here on its schedule for November 27, a date that would have put it up against big family-oriented Thanksgiving releases Moana 2 and Wicked, as well as the second week of Gladiator II. That may have been too much competition for the new Hanks/Zemeckis collaboration, in the eyes of the studio, so they have elected to move its wide release up two weeks to the middle of November.

The new release date for Here puts it up against a pair of movies that, on paper, should represent much weaker competition than the big Thanksgiving movies it would have been pitted against. The first of those releases, Heretic, is an A24 horror film from directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, starring Hugh Grant. The second, the Amazon MGM Studios movie Red One, teams Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans in a Christmas-themed action-comedy.

There was a time when a new Hanks-Zemeckis collaboration would have automatically been entered into competition against the biggest releases of the year, with multiple Oscar nominations on the table. Times have changed, however, and the newest movie from the Forrest Gump pair is being met with a much more subdued sense of anticipation. Here still has a chance to win acclaim, and find a big audience, but the fact that it’s been moved from Thanksgiving to take advantage of seemingly softer competition could be considered a minor red flag.
