In present-day England, Detective Da Shi (Benedict Wong) investigates a series of scientist suicides. As the show unfolds, leading up to 3 Body Problem season 1’s cliffhanger ending, the interconnected lives of a group of scientists, dubbed the Oxford Five—Jin Cheng (Jess Hong), Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo), Auggie Salazar (Eiza González), Jack Rooney (John Bradley), and Will Downing (Alex Sharp)—become increasingly entangled in humanity’s struggle for survival.

“Piano Man” by Billy Joel: In the same scene at the bar, a male patron asks Auggie and Jin if they want to sing. After they gently refuse, the man then sings this song, and he is also very out of tune. This prompts the two women to step out to chat over a cigarette. This Billy Joel song is from 1973 and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the National Recording Registry. It is a common karaoke song in bars all over the world.

“Take on Me” by A-ha: While Auggie and Jin talk over a cigarette outside the bar, this song plays in the background. The 1984 A-Ha song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts when it was released and was boosted by a creative video that included live-action pencil-sketch animation of the band members.

“Moonlight Mile” by The Rolling Stones: Will speaks to students about quantum mechanics, and this song plays as he talks about the “many worlds” theory. The song is from 1971 and remains a lesser-known Rolling Stones song outside the band’s hardcore fanbase.

“Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star: This song plays on the stereo as Jack hangs out with Saul and Will. Jin and Will then share a moment watching birds, reflecting on college, and talking about bird songs. Will tells Jin that he’s planning to quit teaching, which leaves Jin shocked. Will idealistically proposes they go to Patagonia to birdwatch and relax. The song continues as Auggie explores Jack’s room and peruses through his things. This was Star’s only song that hit the charts.

“Karma Police” by Radiohead: As Da Shi is parked in his vehicle outside Jack’s house, this song plays from the car stereo. It highlights the silence of the night. The song then briefly drops while the San-Ti assassin Tatiana (Marlo Kelly) kills Jack, then plays again when the show cuts back to Da Shi’s point of view in the car. The song then continues playing over the end credits of the episode. The song was released in 1997 by OK Computer and was certified platinum.

“Can’t Find My Way Home” by Blind Faith: While sitting in a car, Raj (Saamer Usmani) tells Jin she likes to act sanctimoniously, but they are fighting the same war. As Jin looks out of the window and reflects, this song plays. It continues as the show cuts to Saul being woken up by Auggie vomiting. He takes her to the bathroom and comforts her as she sobs. The song continues as the scene cuts back to Raj and Jin pulling up and sharing a hug, which Will sees. The song is from 1969.

“Video Games” by Lana Del Rey:Will dreams about Jin while wading in the sea while the melancholic piano introduction to this song plays. The scene then cuts to him going to buy a star for Jin as the song continues playing into the end credits of the episode. It highlights Will’s love for Jin and how much he misses her. The song is from 2011 and was certified three times platinum in the United States. The song was also featured in the fourth season of Westworld.
