Nearly 20 years after the original movie first hit theaters, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is officially moving forward. Based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel of the same name, the 2006 dramedy centered on a journalism graduate who goes to work at a high fashion magazine, only to find it not a dream job working under its editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly. Led by Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, The Devil Wears Prada was a critical and commercial hit, landing Streep an Oscar nod and Golden Globe win, as well as Emily Blunt a Golden Globe nomination.

Puck has brought word that Disney is looking to move ahead with The Devil Wears Prada 2, with original writer Aline Brosh McKenna and producer Wendy Finnerman back onboard. The early plot details for the sequel indicate the follow-up is expected to pick up with Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly at the end of her career and trying to revive her dying magazine business, and must turn to her former assistant, Emily Blunt’s Emily Charlton, for advertising money after she went on to be a high-powered executive. While the report indicates that Streep and Blunt are confirmed to be returning, Anne Hathaway’s involvement has yet to be determined.



Hathaway Not Returning Could Still Work In The Prada Universe

While fans of the original movie might find it disappointing that the Oscar winner isn’t yet confirmed to be back, it may ultimately not be much of a surprise that Hathaway may not return for The Devil Wears Prada 2. The star has previously expressed that she found the idea of a sequel “tempting“, but indicated that the time for a follow-up had passed, especially considering that the world of journalism had transitioned to digital rather than print. Despite her being the lead character, there is actually an in-universe reason why Hathaway’s sequel absence could work.

A decade after publishing the first book, Weisberger returned with a sequel entitled Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, in which Hathaway’s character Andy went on to be the editor for a bridal magazine and was planning a wedding. Though Miranda was still a key player in the sequel’s story, as Andy was forced to confront her past after running into her, the movie sequel could explain that Hathaway not returning is due to her being off on her honeymoon, or being busy planning her wedding.


Even with a shift away from Weisberger’s novel by focusing on Miranda and Emily, The Devil Wears Prada 2 could still incorporate parts of the 2013 book. If the movie does find Miranda looking to others for help in saving her business, it could be a fun full-circle moment for Streep’s character to find herself rejected by Hathaway’s Andy after the torment she endured in the original. It could also lay the groundwork for a third movie that closer adapts Weisberger’s sequel, as the reunion between them sends Andy on an emotional spiral as she heads into her wedding plans.
