Squid Game season 2 may be setting up a repeat of season 1’s biggest twist with a new and unexpected character. Three long years after it became a major Netflix hit, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s South Korean show inspired by the country’s love for variety shows and thrillers is almost back for its sophomore year. Initially, there were no plans for a second season, but it’s difficult to pass up the opportunity to continue Song Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) narrative after Squid Game became Netflix’s biggest original show. Now, all eyes are on what’s next for his revenge plot.
At the end of Squid Game, No. 456 was about to board a plane to America to start his new life with his winnings. That said, he decided to change course and come back, as he begins his quest to take down the deadly underground competition. In the first proper trailer for Squid Game season 2, Gi-Hun is back in the game, which also starts with Red Light, Green Light. From the get-go, many perish, but the sneak peek may have also teased who its next traitor is, following Oh Il-nam’s/No. 001’s (O Yeong-su) betrayal in season 1.

TOP’s Unnamed Character Is Far Too Non-Chalant During Red Light, Green Light
The Squid Game season 2 trailer offers the first look at some of the new characters in the show. One of them is played by Choi Seing-hyun or TOP of BigBang, who is also a player in the games alongside Gi-hun. The idol rapper’s involvement wasn’t part of the initial announcement for Squid Game season 2’s ensemble, so very little is known about him; his character doesn’t even have a name yet. That said, TOP could very well be the new traitor, the same way that Il-nam was in season 1.
There are some clues to back up this theory. For starters, he is very cool and nonchalant about the game in a way that’s reminiscent of No. 001 in Squid Game season 1. It’s as if he knows what to expect from the competition. Secondly, there’s a separate hypothesis that he plays a second iteration of Front Man. With Hwang Jun-ho’s real identity now revealed, introducing a different version of the game facilitator makes sense. However, instead of running it from the sidelines, getting him involved in the actual games is a way to update the plot twist.

TOP Being The Traitor Poses A Different Challenge For Gi-Hun
Aside from Gi-hun wanting revenge, not much is known about what the rest of Squid Game season 2 lies for him. The South Korean Netflix hit is already renewed for a third and final season, so it’s safe to say Lee’s character will survive whatever comes his way in the upcoming year. That said, TOP being an insider man in the games can prove to be a big problem for Gi-hun. Unlike Il-nam who is old and dying, this new potential traitor has the physical capability to sabotage his revenge. However, it’s curious if TOP is as conniving as the old man.
In Squid Game, a mysterious invitation to join a competition is sent to people at risk who are in dire need of money. Four hundred fifty-six participants from all walks of life are locked into a secret location where they play games to win 45.6 billion won. Games are selected from traditional Korean children’s games, such as Red Light and Green Light, but the consequence of losing is death. To survive, competitors must choose their alliances carefully – but the further they go in the competition, the more likely betrayal will rear its ugly head.
