Creature Commandos: Cast, Story Details & Everything We Know

The DCU launches with its first project, Creature Commandos, an animated series written by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. Since the DCU’s theatrical start isn’t until the release of Superman in 2025, Creature Commandos gives audiences the first look at DC’s newly rebooted film and TV franchise. The show is based on the DC Comics team of the same name, which is composed of more obscure DC characters. Given Gunn has a habit of adapting strange characters, like Polka-Dot Man, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he chose to start the DCU here.

Aside from its strange characters, Creature Commandos is unique in that it’s the first attempt to launch a cinematic universe with an animated TV show as opposed to a major movie. Gunn has also mentioned the possibility that characters from the animated Creature Commandos show could pop up in live-action DCU projects. Anyone invested in staying as informed about the DCU as possible will likely want to stay up to date with Creature Commandos to get any potential glimpses at what the future franchise might hold.

The Creature Commandos team will be led by Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo. Grillo, as well as his co-stars David Harbour and Maria Bakalova, have some superhero experience already, as they have all played roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Grillo played Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones, Harbour plays Red Guardian, and Bakalova recently worked with Creature Commandos showrunner James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, where she voiced Cosmo.

Indira Varma hasn’t played any major superhero roles, but does have extensive voice acting experience, most recently in The Legend of Vox Machina. Zoรซ Chao is similarly new to the superhero world, but her experience in comedies like The Afterparty and Party Down will likely make her a good fit for Gunn’s typical comedic tone. Anya Chalotra is another newcomer to DC and superhero projects, but her role as Yennefer in The Witcher has some strong parallels to Circe in Creature Commandos.

Just ahead of their DC television debut, ushering in a new phase of TV and film, a new comic-book Creature Commandos team appears to wreak some chaos.

Some additional casting includes Benjamin Byron Davis as Rupert Thorne, as well as a number of undisclosed roles for Michael Rooker, Gregg Henry, Linda Cardellini, and Peter Serafinowicz. The official trailer also showed Rick Flag Sr. fighting Batman villain Clayface. No actor has been announced for that role, but confirming the character for the DCU is exciting.

Now that the first two episodes of Creature Commandos have been released, there is a clearer picture of what the story will be about throughout the entire season. So far, Circe looks to be the main villain of the series, as “Task Force M” is tasked with going to Pokolistan to protect Princess Ilana Rostovic from Circe and her followers, called the Sons of Themyscira. The series as a whole looks to be about this specific mission, with hints of overarching DCU plots being introduced throughout.

The second episode in particular focused heavily on The Bride’s backstory while still moving the overall plot forward, which indicates that various other episodes will take this same approach and dive into the backstories of other characters as the season progresses. It is still unclear if there will be an even bigger threat in Creature Commandos outside of Circe, but she has already proven to be a significant threat to the team.

A Look At What Is To Come

Following its premiere, Max featured a trailer for what is to come for the rest of the season, including some interesting looks at future characters in the DCU.

The trailer continues to show off the strong character moments and ultra-violence that James Gunn is known for, as well as builds on the story beats from the series’ two-episode premiere. What stands out the most, though, is a small glimpse of a possible future Circe talks about, showing a few dead characters in the process. Not only was Superman briefly shown, and also dead, but a dead Starfire was next to him, confirming her inclusion within the DCU, and making Creature Commandos must-watch TV for DC fans.
