Normally, Din Djarin has quite the indestructible suit of armor protecting him in The Mandalorian, but unfortunately, that was no help to Pedro Pascal when he was hospitalized on the set of season 1. It’s a well-known fact that there are a few different Din Djarin actors who help Pascal bring the character to life, mostly to help out with the warrior’s intense stunts and to give Pascal both the freedom to work on multiple projects at once and assist with the overall difficult physicality of the role.
Even this arrangement, however, didn’t keep Pascal from getting hurt on set in season 1. While the actor wasn’t able to be as physical in the role in The Mandalorian season 1 as he was in its successor, Pascal was still needed to film Din Djarin’s first-ever helmet-less scene in the season finale. He’s famously bloodied and battered in this scene after being caught in an explosion set off by Moff Gideon, but not all that blood is fake.

The Actor Accidentally Cut His Nose Open
The story goes, as told by Pascal in the 2020 Disney+ special Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian season 1, episode 3 “Cast,” that Pascal was walking out of his trailer and staring at his sides when he accidentally walked into a piece of plywood. It caught him on the bridge of his nose, and the wound cut deep enough that Pascal had to go straight to the hospital to get stitches. The actor did, however, return to the set directly after to film the final scene.
The incident seems to be mostly a funny memory for the cast and crew, now, as seen in the Disney Gallery special. Showrunner Jon Favreau even joked about how Pascal showed up to the hospital in his full bloody makeup, and so he was rushed right into a room – to which Pascal added a hilarious “This guy’s at death’s door!” Pascal also added that this was his first hospital visit straight from set, even after doing much more dangerous work on other projects, such as running on tin roofs for Netflix’s Narcos.

Dave Filoni also tacked on a joke in the Disney Gallery episode about Pascal trying to method act with this accident, but it actually did add something real to this scene for Pascal. Knowing that there’s an actual, painful injury Pascal is enduring while filming really sells what Din Djarin’s going through in that moment. It also helps to make the rest of the bloody makeup he’s wearing really blend in with the real stitches he has.

Still, it’s a relief that Pascal was okay, and that no worse incidents have ever taken place on the set of The Mandalorian. It does, however, show Pascal’s dedication to his work, especially on this series. It would have been understandable to not return to set directly after that, but the actor was still ready to bring this important scene to life. We’re lucky we get to call Pascal our Din Djarin, though perhaps it’s best that he keeps that helmet on in The Mandalorian – for his own safety.
