Following the successful debut of The Pitt on Max, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill and executive producer John Wells discuss whether a night shift spinoff could happen in the future. Set in a high-intensity Pittsburgh hospital, the show follows Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael Robinavitch and his colleagues as they work as emergency room staff. Created by ER’s Wells and NCIS: Los Angeles’ Gemmill, the show quickly gained success for its gritty, realistic depiction of emergency medicine. While The Pitt season 1 finale aired on April 10, the medical drama was renewed for season 2 in February.
In a new interview with TVLine, the creative team were asked about the possibility of a night shift spinoff of The Pitt happening in the future. The duo were very quick to shut down the idea of a full-fledged spinoff of the show, with Wells opining “it would be a little arrogant on our part” to think the show was successful enough for a spinoff. The duo were, however, open to the idea of a night shift-focused season in the future, with Gemmill also teasing the idea of a wintertime season. Check out what Gemmill and Wells said below:
JOHN WELLS: It’s possible that there will be a season of the show that takes place on the night shift. Whether we would franchise it after…? I think that it would be a little arrogant on our part to think that there’s that much enthusiasm for the show [already]. It’s nice to keep people excited about when it comes back [for Season 2] before we start thinking about how we do five versions of something.
R. SCOTT GEMMILL: I think, in success, I would love to do a night shift [season]. We talked about it. It just comes with its own difficulties. I would also love to do a shift in the wintertime in Pittsburgh.
WELLS: Look, it’s very complimentary that people are excited, and they want more. As storytellers, it’s a wonderful affirmation of what has been a lot of hard work. I know from the outside, sometimes it doesn’t seem like it’s hard work — we’re certainly not tarring roofs in the summertime — but it’s a lot of hours, and to have people want more is a good feeling.

Although they’re not keen on a night shift spinoff yet, their interest in a season about them signals that The Pitt could have strong franchise potential if audience demand grows. The idea of a night shift-focused season is especially appealing, given how the show is renowned for its realism. Nighttime ER work comes with its own set of unique challenges, as fewer resources and late-night chaos can bring out the most challenging aspects of hospital life. A winter-set season, as Gemmill mentioned, could further amplify that drama and show how The Pitt‘s characters handle emergencies in Pittsburgh’s severe weather.
