Holly gave audiences a lot of great exploration as Holly unraveled the case of a missing 24-year-old woman at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which added pressure to the storyline. Holly’s own backstory and anxieties, however, truly got the attention as the case reflected her complex relationship with her recently deceased and manipulative mother.

Though that personal journey does give more depth to Stephen King’s new focus character, it also leaves little else for Never Flinch to examine. Holly’s growth was largely done in Holly, so Never Flinch is at risk of repeating parts of her arc if not handled carefully. The novel could also risk regressing her back for the sake of it, forcing her into her more reserved characterization in other works and taking away the aspects that made her relatable to some audiences. That being said, Never Flinch is not completely without options for Holly’s upcoming arc.

Holly Could Draw Away From Her Friends

Never Flinch could dissect the remaining effects of Holly’s discoveries about her mother as well as how that reflects her current case, keeping her arc fresh while still tying back to her previous book. One important reveal in Holly is that Holly’s mother lied about their finances, keeping Holly tied to her for years, adding a sense of distrust to Holly’s character in Stephen King’s universe. Never Flinch could show Holly beginning to pull away from her friends as a result, regressing in a way that is not unrealistic as it reflects the real difficulties of a healing journey.

The novel’s mystery could also expand on this as Holly must play bodyguard to a women’s rights activist who is being threatened by an unknown assailant but continues to attend her events. The two women can discuss the importance of self-confidence and trust, with the activist’s words helping Holly to rediscover her independence and even explore it further than she did in Holly. By doing so, Never Flinch can move her forward in a compelling way and allow Stephen King to showcase more of her growth as she overcomes yet another killer alongside her own inner demons.
